Blueridge BG-60 – The 1950s Called. They Want Their Guitar Back.

There are guitars that look vintage. There are guitars that sound vintage. And then there are guitars like the Blueridge BG-60, which seem to have been hiding in a time capsule since the golden age of American songwriting.

The BG-60 is Blueridge's take on the classic slope-shoulder dreadnought – that big, comfortable, slightly swaggering shape that has been responsible for an unreasonable amount of great folk, country, blues and rock & roll.

And yes, it looks the part.

That gorgeous vintage sunburst, dark tortoise pickguard, diamond-and-snowflake inlays and vintage-style tuners give it exactly the right amount of old-school attitude. No unnecessary bells and whistles. Just the stuff that makes an acoustic guitar look like it has stories to tell.

But the important bit is what happens when you actually play it.

Big body. Big sound. Surprisingly sensible price.

The BG-60 starts with a solid Sitka spruce top, supported by scalloped bracing. That's a very good place to start if you're after an acoustic with projection, clarity and plenty of dynamic range.

The Santos rosewood back and sides add warmth and resonance, giving the guitar a full, rich voice with plenty of low-end authority. Strum it hard and it doesn't fold its arms and complain. It simply gets louder.

And that's exactly what you want from a slope shoulder.

There's also a slim mahogany neck, which makes the BG-60 considerably less intimidating than its substantial body might suggest. It feels comfortable, plays easily and makes the guitar equally at home with a flatpick, a thumbpick or a set of fingers.

In other words: big guitar, easy manners.

Vintage looks without the vintage headaches

The traditional dovetail neck joint, bone nut and saddle and quality 14:1 nickel-plated open-back tuners show that Blueridge hasn't concentrated all its attention on the cosmetics.

The result is an acoustic that feels considerably more expensive than its price tag suggests.

And that's probably the best thing about the BG-60.

It's not trying to convince you that it's a genuine 1950s instrument. It simply borrows all the good ideas from that era and leaves the warped necks, dried-out bridges and astronomical vintage prices where they belong.
